Our History
The company name comes from James J. Bissett Jr., the founder of the company.  In 1963, with his wife Joan, they made the decision to go from a part time operation of selling and delivering plant material to a full time nursery business.

Operating out of their three acre backyard, Jim and Joan began developing the wholesale redistribution concept, a concept the company continues to develop today.  With a steady growth in business, they expanded the operation in 1970 to include a container growing facility with the acquisition of 8½ acres of land on Long Island Avenue in Holtsville.  This farm is now solely perennial production and was expanded to 12 acres with an additional purchase in 1998.

Long Island continued to grow as did business and in 1973, Bissett Nursery became Bissett Nursery Corporation.  Steady growth over the next 8 years convinced Jim and Joan to make their most important decision to date.  In February 1981, they purchased 17 acres of land on Long Island Avenue at the site where we are today,  In the spring of 1982, James J. Bissett III became a full time member of the management and ownership team.  Bissett Nursery Corp. opened its doors in March of 1982 with the largest selection of plant material on Long Island, a 5,000 sq. ft. hardlines warehouse and a supply of stone, railroad ties, mulches and gravels.

In 1983, the mason and lumberyard was born and all the product lines were expanded.

In 1984, five additional acres were purchased adjoining the property to the east of the main sales yard, and the nursery division and the mason and lumberyard were expanded.

At this point, the number of Bissett Nursery Corp. employees had gone from 2 in 1964 to 52 in 1984.

1985 was a busy year at Bissett Nursery, 2½ more acres were purchased on the east side of the main yard and ground broke for a 24,000 sq. ft. main office and expanded hardlines warehouse.  Also, 65 acres of land was purchased in Holtsville and a container and field growing facility was being built.  Bissett Nursery became the first Horticultural Distribution center on Long Island to convert to a completely computerized system.  There were 96 employees on the payroll.  Bissett Nursery Corp. had grown to become the largest Horticultural Distribution center in New York State.

Bissett Nursery spent the next several years further developing our people, product lines and service systems to make our facility the finest in the industry.

In 1989, 34 acres of prime North Fork farmland was purchased in Mattituck.  This farm has been dedicated to growing select specimen plant material in-ground.

In 1990, Bissett Nursery set another precedent in the industry by opening our computer design division.  Utilizing cutting edge computer imaging technology, Bissett began creating computer finished landscape images for contractors to include in their proposals.  This technology is quickly becoming the standard for the industry.

In 1992, Bissett Equipment Sales and Rental was started to provide the landscape and related trades with light and heavy equipment on an as need basis.  From backpack blowers to 10,000 lb. Load-All machines, it is available to rent or buy.  Along with it, a full service repair and maintenance shop opened, equipped to handle any job.  This division has flourished and become an intricate part of the "one-stop shopping" experience.

Bissett opened a second sales yard in 1995 on five acres in Dix Hills to better serve our customers traveling from Nassau County and points west.  This has also proven to be a compliment to our existing business and has been growing dynamically each year.

In 1996, three acres of property was purchased directly across the street from our Holtsville yard.  Bissett Equipment was moved into a greatly expanded facility allowing them the much-needed room for their growth.

Bissett Nursery Corporation now employs over 170 employees.
